2018 Exam 8 Cookbook Coming Soon

Now that the Fall Exam study season is starting to kick into gear, I want to post an update about the Rising Fellow Supplemental Exam 8 study material.

The CAS just recently posted the 2018 syllabus as well as an updated version of the Fisher paper and excel file. I'm reviewing both of those to see if I need to make any updates for changes.

Beyond that, I am updating a number of the recipes and discussions in the Exam 8 Cookbook as well as updating for the errata. I also plan to have a couple new recipes/problems in the 2018 version.

Exam 8 Cookbook Timeline

[Updated 6/28] I plan to have the updated Cookbook available on the website starting July 9th.

Just a note:
Unlike Exam 7, I won't have a separate problem pack of practice problems and exams.

Updated version for people retaking

If you purchased the Exam 8 Cookbook last year and need to retake the exam, you'll get a free updated version for 2018. There will be information on the Exam 8 page in early July about that.

Exam 8 Past CAS Problems by Paper

Now that we're in the final weeks of preparation for Exam 8, you're probably looking into taking some practice exams. Because of the significant changes in the syllabus, there are a number of past CAS problems that are no longer on the syllabus.

I went through the 2011-2016 exams and put together a list of which papers the problems came from and whether they're off the 2017 syllabus.

Take a look and let me know if you have any questions about it!

Exam 8 Update

Now that we're nearing the end of June, I'd like to update you about the coming Exam 8 Cookbook and share a few details:

Expected Release Timeline

I expect to start shipping the printed Exam 8 Cookbook in mid-August.

Before then, around mid-July, I will be sending out the sections for Part A to everyone on the Exam 8 email updates list. If you haven't already, be sure to add your email to the list and I'll send it to you!

I would love to make the Exam 8 Cookbook available sooner. Unfortunately, that won't happen this year due to the recent overhaul of Part B and since this is the first year I'm doing an Exam 8 product.

I think it will be a great supplemental resource for you as you go into your second pass of the material and begin focusing on practice problems.

Expected Pricing

I expect similar pricing to the Exam 7 Cookbook ($297).

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please be sure to send me an email.

And of course, since exam results are coming out the day this is posted (June 19th), good luck!!!

TI-30XS MultiView Tutorials and Residual Calculations Cheat Sheet

I put up a few new resources on the Resources Page:

TI-30XS MultiView Tutorials

Knowing how to work your calculator efficiently and effectively is key to doing well on the exam. You can save a lot of time if you know how to work some of the more advanced features, such as 2-Var Statistics and List Formulas.

To help you learn some of these features, I put together a few calculator tutorials. Check them out!

Residual Calculations Cheat Sheet

For Exam 7, the Clark, Mack (1994) and Shapland papers all have differences in how they calculate residuals. Since it's tricky to keep the differences straight, I put together a cheat sheet that you can print out as a reference.

Here's a direct link: Residual Calculations Cheat Sheet

I hope those resources help you out. We're almost into April, so keep up the studying!

Most Important Exam 7 Syllabus Sections to Read for Essay Problems

When studying in the final month or two, my strategy was to study for essay and calculation problems separately.

Studying for Calculation Problems

For calculation problems, I think it's best to drill the different step-by-step procedures using a study manual or notes in order to solidify how to solve all of the different types of calculation problems.

That's what I originally created the Exam 7 Cookbook to help me do.

Studying for Essay Problems

For essay problems, I drilled flashcards to memorize the details, especially in the last couple weeks.

But I don't think flashcards are enough.
